Spotlight: Roush Racing Driver X
May 30, 2006
This No. 06 Ford F-150 was one of four vehicles used in
Discovery Channel’s Roush Racing: Driver X, the reality series
that aired in late 2005.
Roush Racing: Driver X debuted October 24, the first of 13
episodes that began with 1,776 hopeful applicants being cut down
to just 25 that would take to the track and compete to become
the newest driver for Roush Racing’s Craftsman Truck Series
team. Based on Roush Racing’s “Gong Show” driver search, Driver
X allowed behind-the-scenes access to the driver selection
process and on-track activity that served as one of the most
intense, and not to mention expensive job interviews ever
conducted.
Beginning one hot morning in Martinsville, Va., and ending three
weeks later on a cool, rainy night in Darlington, S.C., the
drivers were put to the test not only on the track, but off the
track as well. From interviews with various local and national
media outlets to photo shoots and mock sponsor commercials, the
drivers were left in the dark as to the events that would
comprise their days and the selection criteria. From
overwhelming excitement to gut-wrenching nervousness, the
drivers felt the highs and lows of the relentless schedule.
When the dust settled, it was Erik Darnell who was named Driver
X, and winner of a full-time ride in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series.
This Ford, retired from active NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
competition to be used in the driver search, was used at both
Martinsville Speedway and Darlington Raceway. It was the truck
driven by Darnell in the final portion of the competition, the
head-to-head battle where he bested David Ragan in a 20-lap race
to win the ultimate prize- a full time ride in the Craftsman
Truck Series with Roush Racing.
